There is no second place winner in a lethal force encounter--only first and first loser. When the stake is one's life, losing is not an option! To be prepared, one must possess the necessary knowledge, skills and mindset. Achieving these skills requires proper training and continuous practice.

What will you learn in an NRA Basic Firearms course?
Using the NRA training method of Total Participant Involvement, basic courses provide hands on learning opportunities in the following areas:

  • safe firearm handling
  • firearm parts and operation
  • ammunition and its function
  • shooting fundamentals and an opportunity to develop them on the range
  • how to select, clean and store a firearm
  • review of various activities available to help participants develop and improve their shooting skills

Attractive certificates are awarded to participants who successfully complete each basic course. 

NRA Courses Offered:

The NRA Basic Pistol course is designed to give students the basic skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary for owning and using a handgun safely. Through this course, students learn pistol parts and operation, ammunition, gun safety, and shooting fundamentals. Basic Pistol is a ten (10) hour course that may be conducted in one all day session or two half day sessions.....more
 
The First Steps Basic Pistol course is a 3 hour course intended to introduce the student to the skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary for owning and using a specific model of firearm. The goal of this program is teach the participant the fundamentals of firearms safety and shooting, Since FIRST Steps programs are action type-specific (only one specific action type of firearm is taught), and teach only the most basic shooting skills, they are not complete "courses" in the traditional sense of the word....more
 
The Home Firearm Safety course is a 4 hour course designed to present the basic knowledge, skills, and the attitude necessary for the safe handling and storing of guns in the home. Guns are neither safe nor unsafe by themselves. When people practice responsible ownership and use, firearms are safe. The number of accidental firearm fatalities has dropped 52% between 1967 and 1988, according to National Safety Council survey. This decline is a direct result of the increase and effectiveness of gun safety programs....more
 
The Personal Protection in the Home course is designed to develop in students the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to the safe and efficient use of a handgun for protection of self and family, and to provide information on the law-abiding citizen's right to self-defense. PPIH is an eight (8) hour course that may be conducted in one all day session or two half day sessions. Participants must  have completed an NRA Basic Firearms course to be eligible for the Personal Protection in the Home class....more
